A Review of CAPA 2009 Energy and Oil Investment Forum

A Review of CAPA 2009 Energy and Oil Investment Forum

4/04/2009 - CAPA’s first ever Energy and Oil Investment Forum was a timely event for the professionals working in the energy sector eager to assess the future of our industry and the impact of new energy policies proposed by the new U.S. administration. The organizing committee led by James Wang and Joan Wu invited a group of well-known experts from various business sectors in the industry to give the audience a panoramic view of the current events unfolding in the midst of a major slump in commodity prices exacerbated by the global financial crisis.  Both CAPA members and other industry professionals attended the event and provided highly positive feedback regarding the insights shared on our sector. The following provides a summary of the presentations and highlights key points mentioned:

Michael J. Economides (Professor, UH) urges U.S. government officials and policy makers in Washington D. C. to understand the importance of conventional energy resources such as oil, natural gas and coal before embarking on any major policy changes. He envisions new proposed policies will backfire on our society in the near future as decreases in energy investment will lead to systemic supply shortages, which in turn will lead to an even steeper rise in oil prices when the global economy recovers.

Matt Partridge (Upstream Consultant, Wood Mackenzie) provided an update on the implications of the current financial crisis on the oil & gas industry.  He provided insightful analysis for the audience utilizing a rich set of data.

Wright Moody (principal, Deloitte) gave a presentation highlighting the uncertainties around the new U.S. administration's future energy policies, which will affect all of us as energy industry professionals.  His thoughts provided a good framework to think about the various paths forward for us as an energy dependent nation and how to think about the implications of changes in policy as they unfold.

Dean Hennings (Director of Risk Consistency, Anadarko) provided an in-depth analysis of two large independent E&P companies, Anadarko and XTO.

Gregory Panagos (Vice President of Investor Relations and Communications, Transocean) gave an overview on how the recent downturn has affected offshore drilling companies and provided an update on Transocean.

Following the presentations was an interactive panel discussion during which many good questions were raised and various issues were debated.
